There are many reasons one may choose to use online tax software instead of making an appointment to have their taxes filed in a brick and mortar office by a professional.
Cost
More often than not, filing your taxes yourself can be a lot cheaper when you use an online program instead of having your tax return filed by a professional. While some applications are costly and others are quite affordable, all of the options available for filing at home using your computer are less expensive than having them done for you professionally. unicorn blue cheese
Convenience
In today’s busy world, there is little time to do everything that needs to be done on a daily basis. This is especially true if you have a demanding job or a family. You may not have the time it takes to head down to a tax filing office, wait in line and wait while your taxes are being done. Using online tax software can take just a fraction of the time, not to mention that it’s quite simple to stop what you’re doing and save where you’re at, so you can pick up where you left off at a more convenient time. You can’t do that at a tax office!
Free vs. Paid
There are several different options when it comes to doing your own taxes using a program designed specifically for that purpose. There are packages that require a payment to use the product (but do not require a separate payment to e-file your federal return), and there are others that allow you to use them freely and also offer a free federal e-file, but charge for a state e-file. Don’t assume that just because one is cheaper than another that it’s automatically better or worse – each one is uniquely suited to a different type of customer and you might be surprised at which merchandise best meets your needs.
How easy is it for you to navigate through your return, fill out each form or enter and import data? Were there specific features of one product that made it stand out when compared to the others?
Not everyone is tax savvy, and it’s important to have easy access to tax support when doing your taxes yourself. We rated each program based on whether there was enough support available for novice users.
Has the product been around for a while? Is its parent company a reputable company? Are there features such as an “accuracy guarantee” or a “maximum refund guarantee?”
We also rated each product on whether or not there was tech support readily available if you should have issues downloading the package to your desktop computer or logging in online.
